Established in 1859, High Point, NC, got its name from its status as the highest point on the North Carolina Railroad. While it may have begun its history as a railroad town, High Point quickly became known for its massive furniture industry. High Point residents enjoy a wealth of outdoor activities. One of the most popular recreation spots is High Point City Lake Park. The High Point Museum aims to share the history of the High Point area through mostly donated items from Colonial times to present day. The High Point Transit System gets commuters, High Point University students, and visitors around the city. This multifaceted system has a partnership with the Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation and also offers complimentary ADA paratransit service. For further distances, High Point is home to an Amtrak station, and Piedmont Triad International Airport is only about 15 miles away.
